Zotero Guide

Zotero and Omni

Zotero & OMNI

OMNI is the default search system, used at Lakehead, and many other post-secondary institutions across Ontario. You would use OMNI to search across all resources at once - books, articles, government documents, and more.

While you can use OMNI & Zotero together, please be aware of the following limitations, and fixes:

Omni & Zotero for articles

When you are on an OMNI page for an article (such as this page), and you click the Zotero button, Zotero will catch the citation information, but will NOT be able to "see", or collect, the full text .pdf for that article, because the .pdf is another layer deep on the page.

In most cases for articles, we recommend NOT clicking the Zotero button from the OMNI page.

Instead, click one of the View Online full text options first, and then from THAT page, click the Zotero button - as Zotero will then (usually!) catch both the citation and the .pdf at once.

Omni & Zotero for books

If you are viewing a book record in OMNI, such as this one, and you click the Zotero button, Zotero will save the citation information for that book. What you might also wish to be able to do however, which Zotero does not do by default, is capture the Permalink for that OMNI page, so that, in the future, when you click on that book citation inside Zotero, you will be taken back to the OMNI record for that page (and from there, if it's an ebook, have easy access to the ebook).

If it is important to you, to be brought back to the OMNI record for books which you've added to Zotero, please do the following at the time of saving the book with OMNI:

a) Save the book information using the Zotero button as normal

b) Click the Permalink button on the OMNI page, and copy the permanent URL for the book's OMNI page

c) Within Zotero, click on the citation for the book to open up the citation information to the right. Locate the URL line, and click on it, so that you can edit that line. Paste in your permalink URL.

Now, when you double-click on that citation in the future, you will be taken to the OMNI page for that book.
