Qualitative Data Analysis in NVivo

About NVivo

NVivo 11 video tutorial – Open.Ed

NVivo is one of the most commonly used QDA tools for qualitative and mixed-methods analysis. Researchers can use it to manage, analyze, and visualize qualitative data and documents in a systematic way.

It is currently on version 15, and updates are done regularly. It was formerly developed and marketed by QSR International, which is now part of Lumivero.

NVivo Functionalities

There are several functionalities that could be explored in NVivo. These include, but not limited to:

  • Transcription of audio and videos files (only in the premium version).
  • Coding texts data from manuscripts.
  • Annotation of codes by attaching narrative notes to the codes.
  • Navigation and queries (e.g., frequency counts).
  • Mapping relationships and patterns between codes and themes.
  • Data visualization (e.g., word cloud, tree map, cluster analysis etc.).
  • Collaboration among teams and shared access for group projects (e.g., adding comments and notes).
  • Checking for inter-coder reliability when coding is done by two or more coders.
  • Exporting codebooks containing codes frequencies, descriptions and other statistics to support findings, among others.
