What is the Makerspace?
The Makerspace is a do-it-yourself place for students, faculty and staff to explore, learn, create and collaborate.

Open to the following for academic and curricular purposes:

  • Lakehead instructors
  • Lakehead students
  • Lakehead staff

What is available?

  • 2 x Ultimaker 3D printers
  • 1 x Einscan-SP desktop 3D scanner
  • 1 x Oculus Rift virtual reality display system
  • 1 x Dell i7 computer with 32 GB DDR RAM, 256 SSD hard drive
  • 1 x Dell Xeon computer with 64 GB DDR RAM, 256 SSD hard drive and NVidia Geforce 1080 graphics
  • Software - CURA slicing software, Blender, MeshMixer
  • Adobe Creative Suite (also in LI-1003 computer lab)
  • 1 x HP Sprout Pro G2 (on loan from TSC)

Available from the Services Desk:

  • Canon Rebel T6i DSLR camera with 18 - 55 mm lens
  • Sony FDRAX33 Handicam 4K HD video camera
  • Banner style retractable green screen - 58” x 70”
  • Sheet style green screen with frame - 72” x 108”
  • Camera tripod

Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker 3 Extended - 3D Printers

  • Can print objects up to 200mm x 200mm x 200mm and 200mm x 200mm x 300mm
  • Layer resolution up to 20 micron for 0.4 mm nozzle
  • Can currently print with PLA, PVA (support filament), additional filament types (CPE/CPE+, Nylon, and others) will be available

Oculus Rift VR Headset with two sensors, 2 touch controllers
Rift applications:

  • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes (team building)
  • ShareCare VR (exploring the human body)
  • Nature Trek (nature walks/encounters)
  • The Climb (outdoor rock climbing)
  • Google Tiltbrush (virtual painting)
  • Google Earth
  • The Drawing Room (art turned into 3D experience) Einscan-SP 3D scanner
  • With turntable, can scan objects up to 8” x 8” x 8”
  • Handheld, can scan objects up to 48” x 48” x 48”
  • Resolution up to .1 microns
  • Output as .obj, .stl, etc.

Hours of access:
June to August - 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays for drop-in discussion, orientation, etc.
