Omni Search Tips

Search Omni for Books, eBooks, Articles & More

Omni is Lakehead University Library's main search tool that is shared with 18 other Ontario university libraries.

Use Omni to search for books, ebooks, journal articles, and more. You can limit your search to Lakehead Libraries or search all 19 of the Ontario academic libraries that use Omni.

For help with Omni, consult the Omni Help Guide, visit the library in person or email orlib@lakeheadu.ca (Orillia Education Library) or edlib@lakeheadu.ca (Thunder Bay Education Library).

It is possible to RENEW your books by signing in to your Omni account with your Lakehead username and password.  The SIGN IN option is at the top right of the Omni search screen.

Find Books by Title

  1. Go to the Omni Advanced Search.

  2. Toggle the top button to "Lakehead Library"

  3. Change Any Field to Title

  4. Type in the title (do not include "the", "a" - type in what you know)

  5. Change Resource Type to Books & eBooks

  6. Click on Search

You can also search with keywords, just enter your search words in the main search box.  You can put quotation marks around a phrase and enter different concepts in different search boxes.

Results are displayed using a relevancy ranking, but you can change this to display your results by newest date first.   Change the “Sort By” option to “Date - Newest”

To limit your search results you can use the limiters on the left side of your search results screen.

A few tips to filter your results:

  • To limit your search to online, under “Availability” select the “Available Online” filter.
  • You can limit these results further by selecting a “Resource Type”. For example, if you are interested in an ebook, you can select the “books and ebooks” filter.
  • To find print books available in the Education Library (Thunder Bay Campus) only, select “Thunder Bay Education Library” under the “Library Locations” filter
  • To find books available in the Education Library (Orillia Campus) only, select “Orillia Education Library” under the “Library Locations” filter

Find books on Teaching a Subject

Request items from another Lakehead Library

It is possible to request books from another Lakehead library location (Thunder Bay or Orillia campus).  While you are viewing a specific title, sign in to your Omni account to determine which request options are available for that item.   Follow the instructions on the screen to complete your request.

Request items from other University Libraries

The OMNI system used at Lakehead is part of a collaboration with other Ontario Council of University Libraries, and therefore you have access to resources across Ontario when you use OMNI.

With Omni, it is possible to:

  • Request print books from Lakehead, or any OMNI partner library across Ontario, to be sent to the Lakehead Library desk closest to you for pickup.
  • Request that a print book from any OMNI partner library, to be sent to the most convenient library for you, at ANY university, for pickup (for example, if you are a Lakehead student who lives in London, Ontario, you could request that a print book be sent to Western for you to pickup there).
  • If you can tell from the table of contents, of a print book, that you only need a certain section of that book, you can request that that section be scanned and emailed to you as a .pdf.
