Access to books

Lakehead-Orillia students have access to books from a variety of sources:

  • Print and electronic books from any Lakehead Library location (if you need a print book from any other Lakehead library, you can request it to your nearest library following the steps on this page).
  • Print books from other Ontario university libraries. When you search the OMNI system, you are searching the Lakehead catalogue, but also the catalogues of almost all of the other Ontario university libraries. If you need a print book from one of those universities, follow the steps on this page.
  • Scanned excerpts from print books - if you can tell from the table of contents of a print book, that you only need a small section of that book, you can request that that section be scanned and emailed to you as a .pdf. Again, the steps can be found here.
  • Orillia Public Library - If you take your Lakehead Student I.D. card to the Orillia Public Library, they will issue you an Orillia Public Library borrowing card.

OMNI search system - books

Lakehead's OMNI search system (the default search box on the library homepage) searches print books in Orillia and in Thunder Bay, and ebooks available to any Lakehead user. It also searches all of our article databases.

A list of video tutorials, including tutorials on using OMNI for book searching, can be found on this page.

On the OMNI Advanced search screen, you can choose to limit your search to books and ebooks only, using the search field limit shown above.

When your results come up, if you wish to only view electronic books, choose the Available Online limit on the left side (shown above).

If you wish that a print book be sent to your location (for example, a book at the Chancellor Paterson Library, in Thunder Bay, being sent to the Harvie Legacy Library in Orillia) - click on the book on your results page to view the full book information. And then scroll down to the GET IT area, and sign in with your normal Lakehead credentials.

You will be able to ask for the full book to be transferred to your location, or to have an excerpt from the book scanned and emailed to you.
