How to use Lakehead University's Libraries

Basic vs Advanced Search

Many databases have two types of search functions: basic and advanced.

When searching for multiple concepts with keywords, we recommend using the advanced search.

Type of Search  Characteristics
Basic Search
  • Single search bar
  • Can manually input Boolean operators
  • Best for searching for something that is known, like the title or author of a book or article
Advanced Search
  • Not all advanced searches will be the same
  • Will often have multiple search bars that allow the searcher to be more specific
  • Some of these search bars will allow you to:
    • specifically search by author, title, or language
    • add Boolean operators from a drop down menu
    • select the type of resource
    • select a date range

Lakehead Library

When ON CAMPUS at the Chancellor Paterson Library, using our computers will allow you to access all the articles, databases, e-books and other resources the library has.

Unfortunately, when you are OFF CAMPUS you will not be able to access all of our services.

When searching for articles off campus, we recommend selecting the open access filter during your search. This will only show resources you can access and use at any point in time, from anywhere. These will typically be the Free Databases under A-Z Databases.

Using Google Scholar

Instead of providing options to connect words with Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), Google Scholar gives you other options that serve a similar purpose.

Google Scholar Advanced Search Options

  • with all of the words - works like AND
  • with the exact phrase - works like quotes
  • with at least one of the words - works like OR
  • without the words - works like NOT
