Research Guide for High School Students

Basic vs Advanced Search

In many databases there are two types of search functions basic and advanced. When searching for multiple concepts with keywords I would recommend using the advanced search

Type of Search  Characteristics
Basic Search
  • single search bar
  • can manually input Boolean operators
  • best for searching for something that is known like a title of a book or article
Advanced Search
  • Not all advanced searches will be the same
  • The majority of them  will have multiple search bars that allow the searcher to be more specific
  • Some of these search bars will be;
    • specifically search author, title
    • add Boolean operators from drop down menu
    • select type of resource
    • select date range

Lakehead Library

When ON CAMPUS at Chancellor Paterson Library using our computers you will be able to access all the articles, databases, e-books and other resources Lakehead Library has.

Unfortunately when you are OFF CAMPUS you will not be able to access all of our services  so when searching for articles I recommend selecting the open access filter, as this will only show resources you can access and take a look at the Free Databases under A-Z Databases

Using Google Scholar

Instead of providing options to connect words with Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT, Google Scholar gives you options that serve a similar purpose.

  • with all of the words - works as AND
  • with exact phrase - works like quotes
  • with at least one word - works like OR
  • without words - works like NOT
