Progressive Education: revisioning and reframing Ontario's public schools,1919-1942 by Over the course of the twentieth century, North American public school curricula moved away from the classics and the humanities, and towards 'progressive' subjects such as health and social studies. This book delves into how progressivist thinking transformed the rhetoric and the structure of schooling during the first half of the twentieth century, with echoes that reverberate strongly today, and investigates historical meanings of progressive education. Theodore Michael Christou closely examines the case of interwar Ontario, where the entire landscape of public education, including curricula and avenues to post-secondary study, were radically transformed over just twenty years. Christou contextualizes this reformist thinking in light of a social, political, and economic climate of change, which seemed to demand schools that could actively relate learning to the real world. Through its examination of educational journals published throughout the interwar period and previously unexplored archival sources, this book illuminates how the present structure of curricula and schooling were achieved.- For the Love of Learning report of the Royal Commission on Learning. byIn May 1993, the Province of Ontario established the Royal Commission on Learning "to ensure that Ontario's youth are well-prepared for the challenges of the twenty-first century." After exhaustive public consultation, the Commission released its report, entitled For the Love of Learning, in January 1995. The report was to suggest a vision and action plan to guide the reform of elementary and secondary education. This would include values, goals and programs of schools, as well as systems of accountability and educational governance.
- Living and Learning: The Report of the Provincial Committee on Aims and Objectives of Education in the Schools of Ontario (Hall-Dennis Report)The Provincial Committee on Aims and Objectives of Education in the Schools of Ontario began its work in June, 1965. At its initial meeting the Committee decided to invite the submission of briefs by interested organizations and individuals. A total of 112 briefs was received. Public hearings were held in Ottawa in December, 1965, and in Sudbury and London early in 1966, and several public hearings were held in Toronto during 1966 and 1967. The Committee also heard presentations by experts, commissioned research studies, and visited schools, institutions, colleges of education, and universities in several educational jurisdictions. Answers to many problems were found by studying innovations already implemented in the schools of Ontario and other provinces. The Committee sent teams to study the educational systems and programs in many parts of the United States and in several countries in Europe and the Orient. It derived much help from these comparative education visits. Meetings were held regularly to complete the study and write the Report. (From the Foreword).
