Book / Material Suggestions

Suggestions for materials to be added to the Education Library collections are always welcome.

Description of Education Library Collections

Book Collection:  The Education Library Book Collection includes over 30,000 items in all aspects of education.  Included in this collection are practical "how to teach" books as well as education research monographs.   Call numbers for specific items can be found by searching the library's Online Catalogue. It is possible to search for items using subject, title and author information.

Curriculum Documents:   Students have access to the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum documents, both in print (where possible) and online.  This includes curriculum guides,  resource documents, exemplars and other supplementary resources.   When available, links to the online versions are provided through the Library’s Online Catalogue and on the Curriculum Documents page on the Education Library website.  

Approved Textbook Collection:     Textbooks that are currently approved for use in Ontario K-12 classrooms are found in the Education Library's Approved Textbook Collection.  Also included are a selection of teacher guides and other approved student materials. These items are to be used in the Education Library only, however arrangements can be made for in-classroom use. 

Education Journals and Databases:   Education students on both campuses have access to a strong journal collection in education and related subjects. To find a journal by title search the Online Catalogue  or check the Library's  E-journals page. 

Education related periodical indexes/abstracts are listed on the Education Articles and Databases page. These will assist you in locating periodical articles on your topic. These include: CBCA Education, Education FullText, ERIC and Professional Development Collection. These indexes/databases can be searched in the Library and may also be searched from computers off campus through the Library Proxy Service. 

Children's Books / Young Adult Fiction Collection:    This growing collection provides an excellent selection of both children's books and young adult fiction that can be used with children and young adults and support the various subjects taught in the curriculum.  Included are award winning and award nominated picture books; classic and popular titles with books on topics such as Canada; celebrations and holidays; family diversity; multiculturalism; social justice; aboriginal stories; bullying; self-esteem; friendship and character development .   

Children's Non-Fiction Collection:   This collection includes books based on facts and real information intended to be used by children from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in support of topics taught in the Ontario Curriculum.


Media Resources Collection:   This collection includes teaching materials such as DVDs, kits, games, mathematics and language arts manipulatives, software, posters, puppets, thematic units, reading packs, audio books and models.  A strong component of this collection is an extensive and up to date selection of software approved by the Ontario Software Acquisition Program Advisory Committee (OSAPAC) which includes approved software such as: Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional; Geometer’s Sketchpad; KidPix; MathTrek; and Froguts. The Education Library offers over 1,000 items in this collection. 

Historical Textbook Collection:  This collection includes Circular 14 titles, historical Ministry of Education curriculum documents and other publications as well as historical Ontario textbooks from the 1800s and early 1900s.  

Other Materials / Resources Available

Outdoor Clasroom Kit:  The Education Library offers a complete set of outdoor mats which can be used for seating for classes held outside of the Bora Laskin Building.   This kit is available for a one day loan and can be reserved in advance.

Curriculum Document Class Sets:  The Education Library carries class sets of a selection of curriculum documents.  These can be used in-class and can be reserved in advance. 

Equipment:  It is possible to borrow equipment from the Education Library including: digital camera; videorecorder; recorder; tripod etc.  Please see this guide for additional information. 

Digital Media Lab:   Located across from the Dean's office, this lab provides students with additional technology enabled space for learning how to use digital technologies for teaching and learning.  It is possible to use the room for one or two hour time slots and can be reserved in advance.
