Streaming Media Databases

Curio.ca is CBC and Radio-Canada’s online subscriber-based streaming service developed expressly for the Canadian educational community, The collection features thousands of programs and hundreds of teacher resource guides carefully curated to support provincial K-12 curricula and post-secondary courses across the country. Curio.ca gives teachers and students 24/7 access to a wealth of primary-source content in English and French.

If you wish to create a playlist, you will need to create an account. using an access code. Please contact the Research Help Desk - researchhelp@lakeheadu.ca to obtain an access code.

Criterion-on-Demand currently hosts approximately 3000 feature films & documentary titles from a wide variety of major producers, including 20th Century Fox, Dreamworks SKG, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Alliance Films, The Weinstein Company, Mongrel Media, and many more! These files include English, French and Subtitle versions (for Closed Captioning purposes)

How can I view these films?

Films can be streamed online or downloaded for 48 hours. In order to download these films, you will need the Microsoft Silver-light Plugin.

Browsers: Firefox and Safari

Once you choose to download the film, you will be prompted to install the Silverlight Plugin.

Can I embed a film into my D2L course website?

Once you have located the film you want in the Online Catalogue, copy the URL that appears in the pop up window. You can then embed the link in your D2L course page.

Kanopy Streaming Service offers thousands of online videos.
Our access uses a "patron driven acquisitions model" which means that films in this collection can be viewed by Lakehead  students, faculty and staff 3 times before a licence for 1 year is triggered.


 All films include public performance rights.

NFB.ca Campus

Access to over 6,000 films in English and in French.

For Faculty members, create a Campus account which allows you to create playlists, chapters and access to educator’s guides and educational resources.

For Faculty:

Creating Playlists The creation of playlists allows educators to assemble films and chapters on a given subject and write specific descriptions on each chapter and film to contextualize them. The whole playlist can also be given a description.

Creating Chapters Custom chapters allow educators to create an excerpt from any online NFB film. Teachers can also give their own title to the excerpt and give it a description. Chapters can be added to your saved playlists.

 

Theatre in Video contains more than 250 definitive performances of the world‘s leading plays, together with more than 100 film documentaries, online in streaming video - more than 500 hours in all, representing hundreds of leading playwrights, actors and directors.
